Natural reclaimed materials. Check. Typography. Check. Handmade. Check. Vintage feel. Check. Oh, so very Coulson Macleod.

Introducing Coulson Macleod’s Curio Collection, inspired by old pharmaceutical adverts.

For this new vintage art collection, we’ve used hessian, a coarse woven fabric made from the vegetable fibre, jute. We’ve wrapped the hessian around a block measuring 35cm x 35cm just so you know and printed the artwork onto the fabric. Then we’ve mounted this hessian print onto a handmade frame made from gorgeous reclaimed wood (Victorian roof timbers to be exact). The inside of the frame is hand-painted white.

This artwork has an unlimited print quantity.

We’ve attached a hanging mechanism to the rear of the frame so it’s ready for you to hang on your wall.

And just in case you were thinking that the wood looked a bit, well, vintage. Yep! That’s the way we like it. We purposefully retain any defects in the timber to add to the charm and character of the piece. These can include knot holes, nail holes, warps and water marks, so each artwork is totally unique.

Oak-Framed Love Notes

Now for the eagle-eyed amongst you, or if you’re a super-duper fan of Coulson Macleod, you may recognise our latest collection called ‘Love Notes’…

Yes, this is not strictly a new collection of typographic prints. Just a re-worked one.

Our re-worked ‘Love Notes’ collection still features a handmade vintage-style frame made with rough-sawn solid oak.

Our re-worked ‘Love Notes’ collections still features a white-washed oak panel printed with distressed typography.

However the size of each print is now 54cm x 54cm x 8cm. Not the smaller 29cm x 29cm x 8cm.

Why? Well if you love someone you want to tell them in a big way!

And we’ve re-jigged the style. This is how they used to look…

Kingdom Of Rust

Introducing our latest typographic art collection…

From Coulson Macleod’s Rust Collection

We had a lot of fun creating this collection. The steel sheets are naturally weather-rusted. Basically we left them outside. And watched them turn a gorgeous rust brown. As said so beautifully by Doves “My god. It takes an ocean of trust. In the Kingdom of Rust.”

The metal is then over-printed with relief-printed typography and then mounted into a handmade reclaimed wood frame. Once again we use antique Victorian roof timbers.

By using reclaimed wood and rusted metal (the rusting on the steel is completely unpredictable) means each artwork is totally unique.

Now this looks like something you’d find in a junk shop. And covet.

Elle Decoration Loves Typographic Art

Once again Coulson Macleod’s typographic art has been chosen by interiors style bible Elle Decoration to feature in their fabulous magazine.

ELLE Decoration, November 2010 issue.

Elle Decoration chose ‘The Roar of Tree and Crack of Branches’ typographic print from our Winter Trees collection.

We hand make the frame and panelled backboard from reclaimed wood. Actually the wood used to be Victorian roof timbers. How cool is that? We paint the wood and print on top with distressed image and typography.

Each artwork is totally unique. And totally unique to Coulson Macleod.

Now we don’t expect you to have a magazine worthy pad like Penny’s. We just want to see what our typographic art looks like hanging in your home.

Trondheim is right at the top of Norway. So we pretty much have the whole of Norway covered with our five stockists.

The shop is due to open on 15th October and we’ll tell you more about it then. But this is the outside, pre-makeover…

Chez Nous will also be stocking the most delightful stationery from fellow Norwegian company Darling Clementine

And cushions and wallpaper from Danish company Ferm Living…

This is the second shop in Trondheim for the owners of Chez Nous. Their first is Cornelias Hus. As ever, stocked with the most gorgeous products.

Age Before Beauty

Age before beauty is acutally the title of a great article written by Susie Steiner, Editor of Space, the interiors section of Saturday’s Guardian Weekend magazine.

The opening paragraph reads, “Shiny and smooth is out. Gnarled and chipped is in. Get with the distressed vibe…”

Well, obviously I was excited at reading that. Just how ‘on trend’ are we at Coulson Macleod!

Bespoke Typographic Art

I don’t often get to air my views as Macleod is always hogging the blog, but every now and again I manage to pry myself away from, you know, work and stuff, to tell all you lovely people about what we’ve actually been doing. So here I am to showcase some of the bespoke typographic art pieces we’ve produced recently.

If you’ve had a look at the bespoke typographic artwork page on our website you will see that we can produce unique prints based on most of our art collections, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We’re designers, and we can pretty much produce anything you want, whether that’s a specific shape or size, or artwork in a different style entirely.

Here’s a good example. This customer wanted the artwork to fit a specific spot in his hallway so it had to measure 120cm x 60cm, and to match the colours in his striped carpet… not a problem.

“September: checked the calendar and OMG it’s our wedding anniversary coming up fast, what can I get Emm? Had been looking at the Coulson Macleod website a few weeks earlier and it all fell into place. After a phone call and an email things moved fast. I had an idea of what I wanted. Bespoke typography. The first verse from our song. Coulson Macleod had a draft over in a few days. Reclaimed wooden frame made the following week. Delivered the week after. Thank you Coulson Macleod. It looks fantastic. Why do we love Norway?

We’ve just taken an order from our fourth stockist there. Coulson and I are thinking a trip to Norway is in order. We can visit our gorgeous-looking stockists in Oslo, Bergen, Gjøvik, and Nittedal (pictured)…

Coulson Macleod On SheerLuxe

Coulson Macleod is now on SheerLuxe, the luxury shopping directory.

SheerLuxe, who say they are the definitive guide to luxury online shopping (and we agree), feature such established and cool new brands as Liberty, Space NK, Astley Clarke, and Browns. And SheerLuxe invited us to join. How honoured are we?

One of the features of SheerLuxe is that members can create a Lust List. Back in May, we saw that we’d been added to Laura Colonnese’s Lust List. Laura, who is the Brand Manager at English luxury goods brand Thomas Lyte, had also added Louis Vuitton, Solange Azagury-Partridge, and Jimmy Choo onto her Lust List. Now that’s my kind of shopping spree.

Then in August SheerLuxe sent out one of their Luxe Mails to all their members. The email newsletter, called Home is Where the Heart is, was only about Coulson Macleod.

We’re absolutely delighted to be part of SheerLuxe.

Success Is A Journey, Not A Destination

Today is a good day. Why? I hear you cry.

Well folks, we have beaten our sales record. We have sold more prints in August than in any other month in the entire history of Coulson Macleod. And we’ve been up and running for almost eighteen months.

We have a whiteboard on our office wall. Every time we make a sale we wipe off the old number and write up the new one. I say we, but actually I usually do this, partly because my handwriting is neater, but mainly because it gives me a huge amount of pleasure. Every month we write down how many we’ve sold, whether they’ve been sold via Not On The High Street or through shops or if they’re bespoke and how many came via one of our adverts in Elle Decoration or Livingetc.

We love our whiteboard. We quite often catch each other staring at it fondly. Because every month the figures go up. And that is super exciting.

And this month, only half way through August I might point out, we’ve notched up the biggest number since our records began. To let you into a secret, we only started recording this on the board since November, which was when we started selling in serious numbers and the idea of a whiteboard sprang into our heads.

So ladies and gentlemen, tonight we may clink our glasses and say a little toast to our little booming business that we love so much.
