Twenty More Years Of Design

Admittedly this has been on the Coulson Macleod agenda for some time. Our customers keep asking for it. And now, finally, we’ve almost done it…

designed two more typographic prints for our ‘Decades’ collection; ‘The Nineties’ and ‘The Noughties’. Yay!

And, even more exciting news, we’re also launching a bespoke version too. We’ll obviously show you the finished prints when they’re ready.

These are the three existing typographic prints in our ‘Decades’ collection…

Our three new typographic prints will feature brand-new, even lovelier and chunkier, frames. Professionally framed by a Fine Art Trade Guild member.

So in preparation for the launch, we’ve put our framed ‘Decades’ collection (with the old-style picture frame) in our Clearance Page. So don’t hesitate if you fancy picking up a bargain, numbers are limited, and when they’ve sold out… well they’re sold out.

Stamp Collecting, Coulson Macleod Style

Introducing the first of two brand new Coulson Macleod typographic art collections launched today.

The Stamp Collection

A super chunky (8cm deep if you want the exact measurement) handmade, vintage-style, rough-sawn solid oak frame surrounding a white-washed oak panel printed with stamped typography. The size of the artwork is 54cm x 54cm.

The Stamp Collection has an unlimited print quantity.

The oak panel is cut and sanded by hand before being covered with a coat of diluted white lacquer wash to fill the grain, and then sanded and re-washed with the lacquer a second time. The panel is then over-printed with UV ink.

The mitred frame is handmade using rough-sawn solid oak. We purposefully retain any defects in the oak to add to the charm and character of the piece. These can include knot holes, warps and water marks, so each frame is totally unique.

Coulson Macleod Spotted On TV

A funny thing happened last night. As Coulson and I were enjoying dinner with friends our phones started beeping with incoming texts “you’re on TV!”

Yes, one of Coulson Macleod’s typographic prints had been spotted on Channel 4’s celebrity Christmas special of Come Dine With Me.

As usual the programme brought together a strange mix of folk. There was the DJ Goldie (pictured below), 70s crooner Tony Christie, ex-Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis (who’s now better known for being mother of singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor), and actress Susie Amy (best known as Chardonnay from TV-show Footballers’ Wives).

So can you guess in which home our art was spotted?

Coulson Macleod Art Sold In Hirst & Hirst

Coulson Macleod is delighted to announce a brand new stockist: Hirst & Hirst.

Hirst & Hirst is a gorgeous new interiors shop in Oakham (in the very pretty and tiny English county of Rutland).

And they will be selling our typographic art. Yippee!

Hirst & Hirst sell an eclectic mix of contemporary homeware and gifts with a strong emphasis on style. Yep! That’ll be us then.

Many of the items in store have been featured in magazines such as Elle Decoration and Easy Living. Yep! We’ve been featured in both of those magazines.

Some of the designers include Snowden Flood, whose work has been commissioned by the Tate and London Transport Museum. We are totally in love with her glass tumblers with winter trees. As you know, we love winter trees.

Other designers include Matt Wingfield, who has worked for Harvey Nichols, Diesel, Ted Baker and Stuart Gardiner, whose homeware range is sold in Liberty, The Conran Shop, and Anthropologie.

Also for sale in Hirst & Hirst is ISAK, a Swedish brand, founded by Sandra Isaksson, which has an unmistakably Scandinavian style, all influenced by Sandra’s heritage and travels. And we love the fact she says ISAK products are part hand made by trolls.

Lark & Linen Roars For Trees

One of Coulson Macleod’s typographic prints was awarded first prize to the winner of Design Refuge’s October Challenge. Design Refuge, if you haven’t already come across it, is the largest meeting place online for design bloggers worldwide.

The winner was Jacquelyn Clark from blog lark & linen, who had to ask for help as she simply couldn’t decide which of these prints to choose…

Their work is pretty incredible; often made with reclaimed materials, each piece is unique and beautiful. I’ve narrowed it down to the above three and would love to know, which do you prefer? I just can’t decide. As an aside, yesterday Coulson Macleod put together a really sweet feature on their blog about lark + linen. It’s the first time I’ve been featured since starting my blog last April and if you’d like to see it please take a look here. It truly made my day.”

In the end Jacquelyn chose our ‘The Roar of Trees and Crack of Branches’ print, which was featured in the November issue of Elle Decoration magazine.

A Big Night Out With Jamie

Well well well.

Our bespoke typographic print that we designed for Jamie Oliver’s A Big Night Out at St Paul’s Cathedral was sold for… wait for it…

£1,100

And it was bought by David Ellender, Global CEO of Fremantle Media.

The charity evening made in excess of £200,000. Well done Jamie.

Hooray! Coulson Macleod and our globally loved typographic art are award finalists once again.

We’ve made it to the final four entrants at this years Northamptonshire Business Excellence Awards for International Trader of the Year sponsored by HSBC.

Hungry For Handmade

Great article in the Sunday Telegraph a few weeks back that said we should be very excited, because this season is all about the traditional, mixed with flea-market finds.

And we love flea-market finds. Which is why at Coulson Macleod we try to recreate this with many of our art collections.

Handmade. Hand painted. Reclaimed wood. Distressed typography.

The key theme for the autumn/winter 2010 interior is “heirloom”. The article says we’re craving timeless pieces that will look just as good a decade or two down the line, and retailers are granting our wish with handmade accessories using traditional fabrics.

Which is exactly what we at Coulson Macleod are doing.

We commission local craftsmen to handmake our distressed typographic prints. We combine their traditional skills with our contemporary art. So again, we’re bang on trend!

One of the companies highlighted in the piece is Anta, who we featured back in August. Anta has been a personal love of mine for many years. In fact, here is my collection of their slightly wonky, handpainted, stoneware mugs…

Rock The Font

Following on from yesterday’s post about fonts, I was reading the November issue of music magazine The Word

and lo and behold there’s an article on classic rock typography. The article, which I’ve shown below also says about Helvetica, “The face that took over the world you just sort of breathe it in. It’s all over the New York subway — American Apparel, BMW, Saab, American Airlines — the swift, clean, postwar modern typeface. So it’s perfect for an obvious, commercially ambitious act like Oasis. Interestingly they dropped it for two albums — which bombed — but brought it back for their Greatest Hits.”

And Futura, “The 1920s German typeface used on the Volkswagen ads. Influenced by Bauhaus, lots of artistic and intellectual baggage — perfect for the intelligent college band Vampire Weekend claim to be. It was used on the moon plaque almost certainly because of its name — it is futuristic, very clear, the pointed Vs, the sharp angles, the sci-fi connection.”
