This is our very first trade show. And therefore hugely exciting (and pretty nerve-racking). But now the event is going to be even better for us, because we’ve been approved for both of Top Drawer’s special trails. Woohoo!

Renowned TV presenter and environmental champion Oliver Heath (and author of design books that happen to line our bookshelves) has lent his support to Top Drawer’s accredited Eco-Trail.

Oliver’s stamp identifies products that are:

* Produced ethically
* Under fair trade schemes
* Ideally made of sustainable materials
* Biodegradable or reusable in some way

Our typographic artwork has been selected and will be clearly marked with the ‘Eco Trail certified by Oliver Heath’ sticker.
Oliver said, “As a designer it is essential that I’m picking up on key trends and finding ways to express these in the designs that I create; keeping them feeling fresh, contemporary and exciting. Often these trends encourage consumerism for its own sake. However what we are seeing now is a larger cultural shift brought on by the impact of global recession; from a short-term way of thinking about our lives, and what we buy, to a more considered long-term approach. The good news is that many of these changes encourage a more sustainable way of thinking; from saving energy and resources to buying good quality, well-made products or just thinking about the lifecycle of the pieces that we buy.”

And our typographic artwork has also been selected to be on the Product GB trail…

This is an initiative that champions the national economy and locally-made products. With the effects of the downturn still prevalent in some areas of trade in the UK, buying British ensures our local economy is given the best possible chance to flourish.

Product GB gives exhibitors a chance to showcase their products that are made using materials sourced from the UK, and are designed and produced locally.

Visitors to the show who follow the Product GB trail will offset carbon emissions incurred from goods transportation from overseas. Support for this initiative also encourages fair-trade practices, as the Product GB sticker denotes a traceable source of manufacture.

This is the very cool Atelier du Projet in Milan, which opened during Milan Design Week 2011. Atelier du Projet is part concept store, part showroom, part exhibition space. A place that ‘sells ideas.’  And of course they sell Coulson Macleod typographic art.

If you’d like to visit Atelier du Projet, it can be found on the Via San Carpophorus 3, Milan.

Liberty London had opened their doors for their Best of British Design Open Call.

We’d attended Liberty’s Best of British back in April. And Liberty liked what they saw. But gave us an indication that there were a couple of prints that they’d like more. And obviously these weren’t the prints that we had carried down.

So off we went again. Second time lucky perhaps?

We waited for what seemed like an age in the hot rafters of the Liberty store. Tension mounting. The beautiful people of Liberty scurried around with timers and clipboards.

Whilst we waited we chatted to some lovely talented folk. One lady designed glass bowls. Another lady was a fashion designer.

Ed Burstell, Liberty’s Managing Director, passed right by us. Which made us even more nervous.

Finally it was our moment to pitch.

This time, not one, but two buyers were waiting for us.

And you wouldn’t believe who they were…

Michelle Alger. And Faye Toogood.

Now if you’re not particularly into who’s who at Liberty (and why would you be?) then these names won’t mean much. But you may have seen Ed and Michelle on BBC 2’s Britain’s Next Big Thing.

Michelle is the Buying Manager for Homeware.

Faye Toogood is an interior stylist with her own studio. And is BIG news. She does regular consultancy work for designer Tom Dixon. She’s designed Liberty’s windows. She did a refit of Dover Street Market’s shoe department. And she’s currently designing parts of the new Selfridges Hotel, due to open in 2012.

And they loved our art. They weren’t just being polite. They really loved it. Michelle Alger said that she’d never seen anything like it before. And she’s seen everything.

Amazing!

But. And sad to say there is a but. Our typographic art pieces are just not right for Liberty.

However, they did tell us who they thought would like to stock Coulson Macleod art. And that, my friends, is who we’re contacting next. Watch this space.

Holly Tucker put this photo on the NOTHS blog. She was writing about her son Harry’s sixth birthday party.

This particular print has now been discontinued. Which has nothing to do with Holly buying it.
