Jamie Oliver’s Big Night Out 2011

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

The Jamie Oliver Foundation once again held their annual fundraiser ‘A Big Night Out With Jamie’.

And once again Coulson Macleod was delighted to be involved.

Coulson Macleod’s bespoke print designed for ‘A Big Night Out With Jamie’

And once again our bespoke typographic print was won by David Ellender, Global CEO of Fremantle Media who paid the final bid of £950 in the silent auction. Last year David won the bid on another bespoke print we designed for the same event, paying £1,100 for it. He’s obviously a man of impeccable taste.

And once again we received Jamie’s latest recipe book. This time it was ‘Jamie’s Great Britain’, signed by the man himself, of course. And a lovely thank you letter. Jamie said they raised £135,000 on the night. Which is pretty impressive in these financially leaner times.

The Jamie Oliver Foundation also emailed us to say, “We want to thank you very much for your endless support. It definitely would not have been possible without your generous donation.”

Kate Nash performed. Ben Shephard hosted. Jools wore orange (thanks Daily Mail for that snippet). And not forgetting Gennaro Contaldo (as prompted by Jamie on Twitter)..

Personalised Art; On Rust

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Here’s our latest creation; a bespoke typographic artwork for Casco Contractors Inc, a construction company based in California…

This personalised typographic artwork consists of four prints, each one measuring 52cm x 52cm x 8cm. We loved the idea of having four separate prints (like building blocks) that when placed together spells out ‘if you build it they will come’. Should fill their reception wall quite nicely, don’t you think?

Cheryl Osborn, the President and founder of Casco fell in love with our naturally weather-rusted steel sheets.  And she loved the handmade reclaimed wood frames too.

And we rather love the finished design.

Journey Of A Typographic Print

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Story time. This is for anyone who has ever had to deal with customs.

One of our lovely customers, Georgia, bought and created a bespoke typographic print from us. A surprise gift for her boyfriend; for his 30th birthday. The boyfriend (who we shall call Poor Boyfriend) lives in Beirut.

Georgia did tell Poor Boyfriend to expect a UPS delivery to his office. Of course he had no idea what the delivery was.

A few days later Poor Boyfriend gets a call from UPS. They can’t deliver the box. It’s being held by customs. He’ll need to go to the aiport to collect it himself.

A minor hassle perhaps. The good natured Poor Boyfriend asks if they know what the gift is. Well you would, wouldn’t you?

He’s told it’s a piece of art by Coulson. Now we like to think the whole world has heard about us, but of course they haven’t. And UPS had missed off the crucial Macleod part. So Poor Boyfriend was a bit clueless.

So, before setting off to the airport, he did a quick Google search for images by Coulson. And up pops Peter Coulson Photography. He’s an Australian photographer, based in Melbourne. Mainly fashion and glamour shots. Some of it is rather raunchy. Pretty controversial stuff to hang on your wall in the liberal west. But Poor Boyfriend is living in Lebanon.

Poor Boyfriend stumbles across a couple of shots that start to make him sweat. And not in a good way. One in particular stood out. A heavily pregnant naked woman wearing a face veil, high heels, and holding a machine gun. Another naked woman is wearing a KKK hood burning a cross. Gulp!

Poor Boyfriend is scared. Surely Georgia wouldn’t send him something that could get him arrested? Think you’d be sweating at this point too, wouldn’t you?

We’re guessing that the trip to the airport was not particularly pleasant.

Massive relief to find the gift is just a harmless bespoke Coulson Macleod print.

But the pain doesn’t end there.

Poor Boyfriend is then told there is a problem with the invoice value. Apparently the value of the print is incorrect. Despite the fact that we put the value on the invoice. You would assume that the company sending the item knows the value of its own products? But no. This is customs; Beirut style. Poor Boyfriend’s print is now valued at $2,000. Not the £249 we’d put down. He’s then told he’ll have to pay import duty. There is a long and heated exchange. And after paying off several custom officials and wasting over half a day Poor Boyfriend is released.

Poor Boyfriend gets home. He rings Georgia.

But you know what?

Despite fearing for his freedom. His sanity. The hassle. And the huge amount of money to corrupt officials. Poor Boyfriend is blown away with his gift!

And so are his mates.

And so is Georgia when she goes to visit him. “I couldn’t believe how spectacular it was. The photographs on your website really don’t do it any justice.”

Bespoke Typographic Canvas Art

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Do you think your workplace would benefit by having some new art?

Wouldn’t it be even better if this new art was created just for your business?

Coulson Macleod can do just this. Send us all your relevant words. Use ones that promote what your company does, after all it will be read by all your waiting customers or clients. And we turn those words into a cool piece of personalised typographic art.

What words would you use?

This is a bespoke typographic canvas print that Coulson Macleod created for a new beauty salon/clinic called Beauty Defined.

Your Coulson Macleod canvas typographic art print would be of museum quality. Each print is hand-mounted and finished with the finest materials by expert local craftsmen.

Your canvas-mounted print would be produced using the very latest giclée print technology. Heavyweight 450gsm, 100% cotton, Brilliance Chromata White premium fine art matte canvas is used to ensure colour reproduction and longevity are at their absolute maximum. This canvas is optical brightener agent free (optical brightener causes yellowing over time) and has passed the Blue Wool standards test for light fastness (up to 75 years) and is one of only a few canvases to achieve this.

Your canvas artwork is hand-sprayed with five coats of Glamour II Giclée Matt Varnish to ensure maximum protection and a smooth consistent finish. This is a non-yellowing, water-based varnish that enhances the colour of pigmented and ultrachrome inks on matte media and increases resistance to image fading. It also protects images against moisture and abrasion. The combination of Glamour II Matt Varnish with Brilliance Chromata White canvas delivers the most archival and colour-stable fine art reproduction available.

Businesswoman In Line For Top Regional Award

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Article on me in today’s local paper…

A businesswoman is in the final three of a major regional award after turning the design company she started from her front room two years ago into a thriving global brand.

Hannah Macleod is up for Small Business of the Year in the final in the East Midlands Women of Worth Awards.

Ms Macleod said: “This is a really big award. Last year more than 1,000 people entered that category alone.

It’s absolutely phenomenal. If I don’t win, just being in the final three is incredible.”

The awards aim to recognise the commitment and contribution made by business women to the East Midlands economy and the achievement of the region’s entrepreneurial and forward-thinking women.

Without any business loans from banks since setting up in 2009, Ms Macleod and her partner Mark Coulson have been shipping their typographic art to 21 countries.

Last year chef Jamie Oliver commissioned a piece for a charity auction. The oak-framed piece, which featured Mr Oliver’s catch phrases, like “pukka”, “bacon sarnies” and “geezer”, was bought for £1,100 by the chief executive of a global media company.

Ms Macleod said: “Every day is amazing for us. It’s not a job, it’s not a business, it’s a passion. We enjoy every side of it.”

She will meet a panel of judges on February 11, and the winner will be announced at the Women in Business Conference at the East Midlands Conference Centre on March 8.

Ms Macleod reached the finals of the Best Online Business Award in the national Mumpreneur Awards last year.

The business, Coulson Macleod, also reached the finals in the Northamptonshire Business Excellence Awards for International Trader of the Year.

But Ms Macleod has vowed not to rest on her laurels.

She said: “We will continue doing exactly what we are doing. Whatever it is we are doing it right.”
