‘Meeting At Night’ by Robert Browning

The grey sea and the long black land;

And the yellow half-moon large and low;

And the startled little waves that leap

In fiery ringlets from their sleep,

As I gain the cove with pushing prow,

And quench its speed i’ the slushy sand.

Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;

Three fields to cross till a farm appears;

A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch

And blue spurt of a lighted match,

And a voice less loud, through its joys and fears,

Than the two hearts beating each to each!

‘First Love’ by John Clare

I ne’er was struck before that hour,

With love so sudden and so sweet,

Her face it bloomed like a sweet flower

And stole my heart away complete.

My face turned pale as deadly pale,

My legs refused to walk away,

And when she looked, what could I ail?

My life and all seemed turned to clay.

And then my blood rushed to my face

And took my eyesight quite away,

The trees and bushes round the place

Seemed midnight at noonday.

I could not see a single thing,

Words from my eyes did start -

They spoke as chords do from the string,

And blood burnt round my heart.

Are flowers the winter’s choice?

Is love’s bed always snow?

She seemed to hear my silent voice,

Not love’s appeals to know.

I never saw so sweet a face

As that I stood before.

My heart has left its dwelling-place

And can return no more.

We saw it in each other’s eye,

And wished, in very half-breathed sigh,

She felt my lips’ impassioned touch -

‘Twas the first time I dared so much,

And yet she chid not;

But whispered o’er my burning brow,

‘Oh, do you doubt I love you now?’

Sweet soul! I did not.

Warmly I felt her bosom thrill,

I pressed it closer, closer still,

Though gently bid not;

Till — oh! the world hath seldom heard

Of lovers, who so nearly erred,

And yet, who did not.

I wish I could remember the first day,

First hour, first moment of your meeting me;

If bright or dim the season, it might be

Summer or winter for aught I can say.

So unrecorded did it slip away,

So blind was I to see and to foresee,

So dull to mark the budding of my tree

That would not blossom yet for many a May.

If only I could recollect it! Such

A day of days! I let it come and go

As traceless as a thaw of bygone snow.

It seemed to mean so little, meant so much!

If only now I could recall that touch,

First touch of hand in hand! — Did one but know!

Love is not just a function of the eyes.

Beautiful objects will, of course, inspire

Possessive urges — you need not despise

Your taste. But when insatiable desire

Inflames you for a girl who’s out of fashion,

With every Valentine’s purchase of one of our typographic prints, we are including a handmade Ruby Wren love card. Each heart has been individually cut by hand. A true labour of love.

And best of all, this card is exclusive to Coulson Macleod.

The card is lovingly hand cut from wildflower seed paper. No, not just any old paper for us. You can actually plant your card in your garden or window box and wait for the flowers to grow in the summer. Literally watch your love blossom each year. How lovely is that?

And this is what you could be growing…

Pretty yellow Birdsfoot Trefoil, Black Medick, and Meadow Buttercup.

Red Campion.

White Campion.

Purple thistle-like Black Knapweed and purple Selfheal, a member of the mint family.

Feathery foliaged Yarrow.

Watch the leaves of your Common Vetch fold at night and attract bees and butterflies with your ice-pink Musk Mallow.

It was considered lucky to step on an Ox-eye Daisy, the first flower of the year.

And these lush grasses will sprout too…

Ribwort Plantain.

Browntop Bent.

Red Fescue.

Crested Dogstail.

Meadow Fescue.

Smooth Stalk Meadow Grass.

And guess what the C5-sized envelope is made from?

Elephant poo!

Ruby Wren buys this exotic stuff from a small Somerset-based company that make 100% recycled paper in the UK in a traditional paper mill. They are approved by the National Association of Paper Merchants and are members of the British Association of Fair Trade Shops.

And just in case you wondering, which I’m guessing you are, the envelopes don’t smell. Elephants are herbivores, which means their waste is very clean. So don’t try this at home using poo from say, your dog. And as elephant poo is obviously a waste product it will rot very easily. And if that wasn’t enough wonderful eco-friendly news, the company who make the elephant poo paper support The Millennium Foundation in Sri Lanka who home and look after old elephants. So, by using elephant poo paper we’re actually helping elephants.

Oh, and just in case you think we’d slipped up with the cellophane outer wrapper. It’s made from corn starch.

So, not only are our Valentine’s Day cards free. They are also exclusive. They support small local business. They are environmentally friendly. They save elephants. And they are a gardening gift. Phew! And of course you’ll get massive Brownie points for being so original and thoughtful.

Ruby Wren has been featured in numerous magazines including House Beautiful and You&Your Wedding and you can find their cards sold in the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.
