‘Did Not’ by Thomas Moore

‘Twas a new feeling — something more

Than we had dared to own before,

Which then we hid not;

We saw it in each other’s eye,

And wished, in very half-breathed sigh,

To speak, but did not.

She felt my lips’ impassioned touch -

‘Twas the first time I dared so much,

And yet she chid not;

But whispered o’er my burning brow,

‘Oh, do you doubt I love you now?’

Sweet soul! I did not.

Warmly I felt her bosom thrill,

I pressed it closer, closer still,

Though gently bid not;

Till — oh! the world hath seldom heard

Of lovers, who so nearly erred,

And yet, who did not.

‘First Day’ by Christina Rossetti

I wish I could remember the first day,

First hour, first moment of your meeting me;

If bright or dim the season, it might be

Summer or winter for aught I can say.

So unrecorded did it slip away,

So blind was I to see and to foresee,

So dull to mark the budding of my tree

That would not blossom yet for many a May.

If only I could recollect it! Such

A day of days! I let it come and go

As traceless as a thaw of bygone snow.

It seemed to mean so little, meant so much!

If only now I could recall that touch,

First touch of hand in hand! — Did one but know!

From now until Valentine’s Day (whilst stocks last) we’re including one of these gorgeous handmade cards with every purchase of one of Coulson Macleod’s love-related typographic prints. The handmade card has been designed exclusively for Coulson Macleod by Ruby Wren.

Each heart has been individually cut by hand from wildflower seed paper. A true labour of love.

So when you’ve finished with your card you can plant it and wait for the flowers to grow. Literally watch your love blossom.

And this is what you could be growing…

Pretty yellow Birdsfoot Trefoil, Black Medick, and Meadow Buttercup.

Red Campion.

White Campion.

Purple thistle-like Black Knapweed and purple Selfheal, a member of the mint family.

Feathery foliaged Yarrow.

Watch the leaves of your Common Vetch fold at night and attract bees and butterflies with your ice-pink Musk Mallow.

It was considered lucky to step on an Ox-eye Daisy, the first flower of the year.

And these lush grasses will sprout too…

Ribwort Plantain.

Browntop Bent.

Red Fescue.

Crested Dogstail.

Meadow Fescue.

Smooth Stalk Meadow Grass.

And the C5-sized envelope is made from elephant poo (and no it doesn’t smell). Oh, and just in case you think we’d slipped up with the cellophane outer wrapper, it’s made from corn starch.

A mere six hour drive from the nearest airport (and probably a very bumpy & scary journey we imagine). But worth it.

The hotel is in a tiny village inhabited by just five families (who practice polyandry). With so few people we can’t fathom how a woman can find that many men to marry. Enjoy the view…

Print dimensions — 35cm x 35cm x 5cm

We’ve wrapped a block in natural calico (unbleached cotton), which has been washed by hand then dried flat to give a textured ‘crease’ effect. Overprinted it with a winter tree image and text.

Then mounted them three different ways, to give you plenty of choice…

Print Only. Backed with a thin sheet of MDF. A sawtooth hanger and protection pads are fixed to the rear so the print is ready for hanging.

Print with Painted MDF Mount. A block of 2.5cm thick MDF is hand-painted grey and mounted to the rear of the calico print. A sawtooth hanger and protection pads are fixed to the rear so the print is ready for hanging.

Print with Reclaimed Timber Frame. The frame is handmade using reclaimed antique Victorian roof timbers. The inside of the frame is hand-painted in grey and the calico print is then mounted in the frame, and a hanging mechanism attached to the rear so it’s ready for hanging. We purposefully retain any defects in the timber to add to the charm and character of the piece. These can include knot holes, nail holes, warps and water marks, so each artwork is totally unique.

Last year David won the bid on another bespoke print we designed for the same event, paying £1,100 for it. He’s obviously a man of impeccable taste.

And once again we received Jamie’s latest recipe book. This time it was ‘Jamie’s Great Britain’, signed by the man himself, of course. And a lovely thank you letter. Jamie said they raised £135,000 on the night. Which is pretty impressive in these financially leaner times.

The Jamie Oliver Foundation also emailed us to say, “We want to thank you very much for your endless support. It definitely would not have been possible without your generous donation.”

Other details of the night.…

Kate Nash performed. Ben Shephard hosted. Jools wore orange (thanks Daily Mail for that snippet). And not forgetting Gennaro Contaldo (as prompted by Jamie on Twitter)..

“The Jamie Oliver Foundation is a registered charity whose mission is to empower, educate and engage as many people as possible to love and enjoy good food. This means learning how to cook, understanding where food comes from, and recognizing the power it can have on our health, happiness, and even finances. We do this through teaching, training and employment, and also by making good clear information available to as many people as possible.”

There was an article in yesterday’s Sunday Telegraph entitled ‘The £20m two-bedroom house’ by Richard Eden that caught Coulson Macleod’s eye.

Seeing as he writes so much better than we can, this is an edited version of his article…

“François Pinault, who founded PPR, the luxury goods company that owns fashion labels including Gucci and Stella McCartney, has paid £20 million for a house in Chelsea.

Photograph by François Halard

Mr Pinault, 75, whose son, François-Henri is married to Salma Hayek, the Hollywood actress, is planning a programme of alterations to the Queen Anne revival-style property.

The house was used as the bachelor pad of Richard Griffith’s character, Uncle Monty, in the cult 1986 film Withnail and I.

Mr Pinault, who is a friend of Jacques Chirac, the former French president, proposes the “reinstatement of original features such as the main staircase” and plans to redesign the bedrooms, kitchen and bathroms.

Mr Pinault, who owns the Château Latour wine estate, is one of France’s two richest men.

He possesses one of the biggest collections of contemporary art in the world (ahem!) and has collected works by Damien Hirst, the British artist.

In 1998, the tycoon, who owns two art galleries in Venice, bought a majority share of Christies’s auction house.”

For some reason, we at Coulson Macleod HQ like to know what Mr Pinault is up to. Probably as he seems to be a man of great taste.
