Bespoke Typographic Canvas Art

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Do you think your workplace would benefit by having some new art?

Wouldn’t it be even better if this new art was created just for your business?

Coulson Macleod can do just this. Send us all your relevant words. Use ones that promote what your company does, after all it will be read by all your waiting customers or clients. And we turn those words into a cool piece of personalised typographic art.

What words would you use?

This is a bespoke typographic canvas print that Coulson Macleod created for a new beauty salon/clinic called Beauty Defined.

Your Coulson Macleod canvas typographic art print would be of museum quality. Each print is hand-mounted and finished with the finest materials by expert local craftsmen.

Your canvas-mounted print would be produced using the very latest giclée print technology. Heavyweight 450gsm, 100% cotton, Brilliance Chromata White premium fine art matte canvas is used to ensure colour reproduction and longevity are at their absolute maximum. This canvas is optical brightener agent free (optical brightener causes yellowing over time) and has passed the Blue Wool standards test for light fastness (up to 75 years) and is one of only a few canvases to achieve this.

Your canvas artwork is hand-sprayed with five coats of Glamour II Giclée Matt Varnish to ensure maximum protection and a smooth consistent finish. This is a non-yellowing, water-based varnish that enhances the colour of pigmented and ultrachrome inks on matte media and increases resistance to image fading. It also protects images against moisture and abrasion. The combination of Glamour II Matt Varnish with Brilliance Chromata White canvas delivers the most archival and colour-stable fine art reproduction available.

Rule Britannia

If there was any day to promote our Union Jack typographic art, then it definitely is today.

Rule Britannia’ is a huge canvas (76.2cm x 117cm x 4.5cm) — a funky typographic twist on the British flag. Here’s to being patriotic.

More Than A Copycat

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Thought we’d share with you one of the more unfortunate sides of becoming a successful business.

We have a copycat.

On the one hand this is flattering. They obviously think we’re a good model to base your business on. Which we are. On the other hand, as you can imagine, it’s annoying.

When they first launched, about a year after us, they even had the audacity of producing a canvas-mounted artwork exactly the same as ours. Until we threatened legal action. Now they have something pretty similar, just not as good.

Coulson Macleod’s ‘No Place Like Home’ canvas-mounted art print

But they don’t just copy designs. Far more than that. They follow everything we do, then replicate it. Weird hey?

This copycat company has also stolen designs from other companies, then sells them as ‘unique’. At least three other companies have had their ideas reproduced.

Sometimes when we’ve written something on our blog, or our Facebook page, or tweet on Twitter, I see almost the same words the next day from this company. It’s like hearing an echo.

No doubt they’ll be reading this. But as they have no shame I don’t for one second think this will stop them.

Oh the joys of being in business!

It’s All Just Noise

Friday, July 30th, 2010

For the eagle-eyed among you, you will have noticed that we have two new prints in our ‘Noise’ collection. The first is ‘The Beatles’…

And the second is ‘The Rolling Stones’…

Little confession time. Our two new prints have actually replaced two. ‘The Pixies’ and ‘The Velvet Underground’. Why? Erm… well… *whisper* they were not that popular.

Could have lied and said they had sold out. But that’s lying and we don’t lie. And of course the whole reason for our blog is to record the ups and downs of Coulson Macleod.

There is no point keeping them if they don’t sell. They are a remnant of the first days of Coulson Macleod, when Coulson used to design things just for himself. He loves The Pixies. And he loves The Velvet Underground. But clearly not everyone shares his enthusiasm.

And to quote The Beatles, it really is a ‘long and winding road’.

Coulson Macleod Makes A Noise

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Just had some really great close-up shots of our limited edition canvas print ‘American Noise’ — and we think they look fantastic.

Our canvas prints are finished by hand, by experienced local craftsmen.  We use a natural (100% cotton), textured canvas, complemented by a chunky (45mm deep) Dutch spruce frame.

Let us know what you think.

Why Coulson Macleod Canvases Look So Good

Monday, November 30th, 2009

We at Coulson Macleod are sticklers for lots of things, and one of them is quality.

Our artwork is finished by hand, by experienced local craftsmen. So no mass-produced ‘made in China’ stuff here. Each piece of artwork is quality-checked at every stage — after printing, after varnishing, and after mounting — to ensure our high standards are maintained.

We spent a long time finding just the right canvas. The one we use has a lovely natural, textured finish and is 100% cotton. It’s a heavy canvas too, perfect for wrapping around our chunky (4.5 cm deep) frames. The canvas is also optical brightener agent free, which does sound a bit dull, but optical brighteners cause yellowing over time, and of course we don’t want that. The canvas we use has also passed the Blue Wool Standards test for light fastness (up to 75 years) and is one of only a few canvases to achieve this. You see what you mean when I say we’re sticklers for quality!

A Coulson Macleod canvas-mounted print is produced using the very latest giclee print technology, so we can get the best colour and detail. The quality of our giclee print rivals traditional printing processes and is commonly found in museums and galleries.  And on the walls of many of the loveliest homes around the globe!

After printing, a Coulson Macleod canvas is then hand-sprayed with five coats of varnish to ensure maximum protection and a smooth consistent finish. The varnish we use is a non-yellowing, water-based, varnish that enhances the colour and increases resistance to image fading. It also protects images against moisture and abrasion.

Then comes the frame. Museum-quality of course!  A Coulson Macleod canvas is wrapped by hand onto the wooden frame. We choose Dutch spruce as this wood is free from knots and is completely straight. We also put wedges in the frame, which can be gently tapped to tighten the canvas. The final part of the process is fitting the hangers on the back so the canvas print sits flat against your wall.

Caring For Your Coulson Macleod Canvas

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Coulson Macleod canvases are printed using pigmented inks that are UV stable and sealed with UV protecting varnish and, if looked after correctly, will last for many years. Typically this can be in excess of 75 to 100 years.

Here are a few suggestions to help you to look after your canvas.

  • Avoid handling as much as possible to prevent scuffs and scratching.
  • Avoid displaying in direct sunlight. Although UV stable inks and varnish are used, direct sunlight will reduce the lifespan of your canvas.
  • Avoid displaying your canvas in areas of extreme and fluctuating temperatures and humidity.
  • Never clean using a damp cloth, solvents, or cleaning fluids.
  • Should dust settle on your canvas then remove with a feather duster or use a soft brush to wipe while using a vacuum. Do not let the vacuum nozzle touch the canvas surface.
  • Avoid contact with moisture. Should any moisture come in contact with your canvas then dab gently with a dry, lint-free, cloth to remove and avoid wiping and rubbing.
  • Canvas is a natural product and will stretch over time. Your canvas will be framed onto high-quality double-laminated kiln-dried stretcher bars. Should your canvas appear to sag, these enable you to re-tension your canvas by carefully tapping the wedges.
