Elle Interior’s Christmas Issue 2010

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Coulson Macleod’s typographic art is in the Christmas issue of Norwegian magazine Elle Interior.

As you can see Elle Interior has featured a print from our Winter Trees collection.

Our handmade Winter Tree prints are made from reclaimed wood (the timber started out life as Victorian roof timbers to be precise). We then whitewash the wood and over-print with a distressed image and distressed typography. Well it wouldn’t be a Coulson Macleod without some distressed typography would it?

Coulson Macleod Loves Plain English

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Every time we flick through an interiors magazine we stop to drool over a Plain English advert. Compared to all the other bespoke kitchens you see advertised (and there are a lot) it’s Plain English that leaps out. So simple. So beautiful. So very Coulson Macleod.

Coulson Macleod Art Sold In Hirst & Hirst

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Coulson Macleod is delighted to announce a brand new stockist: Hirst & Hirst.

Hirst & Hirst is a gorgeous new interiors shop in Oakham (in the very pretty and tiny English county of  Rutland).

And they will be selling our typographic art. Yippee!

Hirst & Hirst sell an eclectic mix of contemporary homeware and gifts with a strong emphasis on style. Yep! That’ll be us then.

Many of the items in store have been featured in magazines such as Elle Decoration and Easy Living. Yep! We’ve been featured in both of those magazines.

Some of the designers include Snowden Flood, whose work has been commissioned by the Tate and London Transport Museum. We are totally in love with her glass tumblers with winter trees. As you know, we love winter trees.

Other designers include Matt Wingfield, who has worked for Harvey Nichols, Diesel, Ted Baker and Stuart Gardiner, whose homeware range is sold in Liberty, The Conran Shop, and Anthropologie.

Also for sale in Hirst & Hirst is ISAK, a Swedish brand, founded by Sandra Isaksson, which has an unmistakably Scandinavian style, all influenced by Sandra’s heritage and travels. And we love the fact she says ISAK products are part hand made by trolls.

Coulson Macleod Loves Sanna Annukka

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Coulson Macleod simply can’t fault with this half Finnish, half English illustrator and print maker Sanna Annukka. Her greeting cards are heavenly. In fact far too lovely to give away.

3013.sun bird 3012. spring flower 3011. out at sea

3016. bird of paradise 3018. island 3022. totem

In 2006 Sanna’s work was spotted by Keane, which led to a collaboration on their album ‘Under the Iron Sea.’ Her client list includes; Universal Island Records, British Vogue, Apple/itunes, M&S and Marimekko.

She has designed a limited edition mug for Elle Decoration and even the trams in Helsinki sport her designs.

One day, one day…

Coulson Macleod Loves Gabriel Dawe

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Today we’re wowed by installation artist, Gabriel Dawe’s work. Plexus, made simply from thread nailed onto wood, is just so beautiful.

Gabriel’s installation Plexus No. 4 is currently showing at Dallas Contemporary until January 23rd.

Lark & Linen Roars For Trees

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

One of Coulson Macleod’s typographic prints was awarded first prize to the winner of Design Refuge’s October Challenge. Design Refuge, if you haven’t already come across it, is the largest meeting place online for design bloggers worldwide.

The winner was Jacquelyn Clark from blog lark & linen, who had to ask for help as she simply couldn’t decide which of these prints to choose…

Handmade vintage-style, rough-sawn, solid oak frame surrounding a white-washed oak panel printed with distressed typography

Distressed typography printed onto solid limestone

Handmade frame and panelled backboard made from reclaimed wood, paint is applied by hand and then over-printed with distressed image and typography

She said, “So as you all know, I was voted the Design Refuge October challenge winner. Yay!! My prize includes a print from the very talented Coulson Macleod and I need your help! Their work is pretty incredible; often made with reclaimed materials, each piece is unique and beautiful. I’ve narrowed it down to the above three and would love to know, which do you prefer? I just can’t decide. As an aside, yesterday Coulson Macleod put together a really sweet feature on their blog about lark + linen. It’s the first time I’ve been featured since starting my blog last April and if you’d like to see it please take a look here. It truly made my day.

In the end Jacquelyn chose our ‘The Roar of Trees and Crack of Branches’ print, which was featured in the November issue of Elle Decoration magazine.

A Big Jamie Oliver Thank You

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

The postman delivered a surprise parcel to Coulson Macleod HQ on Friday.

A parcel for us? Normally it’s Coulson Macleod sending out parcels.

It was from Jamie Oliver. Yes the man himself sent us a lovely letter and a signed copy of his latest recipe book 30 Minute Meals. Which saved us from going out and buying a copy!

And why should Jamie Oliver be thanking Coulson Macleod? Well we designed a bespoke typographic print for his charity, The Jamie Oliver Foundation. The print was auctioned off at A Big Night Out With Jamie, his fundraising evening held at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Our print was bought by David Ellender, Global CEO of Freemantle Media for £1,100.

Christmas Is Coming…

Friday, November 19th, 2010

…and the goose is getting fat.

Only five weeks left before Christmas.

If you’re still looking for gift ideas or a little something to decorate your mantelpiece how about our latest typographic art collection ‘Christmas’…

The ‘Christmas’ collection. Handmade typographic art on reclaimed wood.

Christmas Grey’. Handmade typographic art on reclaimed wood.

Christmas Green’. Handmade typographic art on reclaimed wood.

Christmas Red’. Handmade typographic art on reclaimed wood.

A solid square (24cm x 24cm x 2cm) of reclaimed wood, hand-painted white and then over-printed with distressed typography.

The reclaimed wood is cut and sanded by hand, and we retain any defects in the salvaged timber to add to the charm and character of the piece.

International Trader Of The Year: Part 2

Friday, November 19th, 2010

No. We didn’t win International Trader of the Year.

Not this year anyway.

We were a minnow amongst whales to be honest. When they showed the video footage of the finalists, we winced when we saw vast factories, industrial machinery, and a sea of staff behind desks or driving lorries in logo-ed overalls.

And then there’s Coulson Macleod. Just the two of us. No staff and no fancy reception area with potted plants.

One of the companies in our category went on to win Best Business with over 50 Employees.

Other businesses up for awards last night included supermarket giants Waitrose and Sainsbury’s. We spent all night saying to each other, “What are we doing here?”

Most of the tables of 12 were taken by entire companies. Their staff enjoying a night out with free-flowing wine.

And we enjoyed ourselves too. We were entertained by Simon Evans, the comedian/writer who hosted the evening. And it’s always fun getting dressed up. Even if you don’t come home carrying an award.

And if you happen to be wondering why on earth Coulson Macleod would be a finalist for International Trader of the Year, then perhaps this is part of the reason: we have shipped our prints to 21 countries to date… Australia, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America.

New Shipping Prices

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

OK. News time.

We at Coulson Macleod HQ have been thinking. Which we do from time to time. We’ve been discussing shipping costs.

Previously, if you lived outside of mainland UK, you had to contact us to get a price for shipping your typographic print.

We tried to standardise our prices. But our prints are all different sizes, weights and we’ve shipped to 20 far-flung countries. Basically we couldn’t get it to work.

Well that, my friends, has all changed. We have worked it out!  Thank goodness I hear you cry.

We’ve covered part (in some cases a big part) of the cost in order to keep the shipping price low. And you can buy any number of prints, the price won’t change. Just one price.

  • £5 to Northern Ireland / Scottish Highlands & Islands
  • £10 to Europe
